Hi everyone,
You all recieved an email several weeks ago about the Art Celebration at Aycock Middle School. This is to raise money for their art department. Because of the bad weather, the celebration was rescheduled. It will now be taking place on Tuesday, March 23 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. If you are interested and available to volunteer at this time they would love to have your artistic talents put to use. If you want to sign up please email Maria Lim at e_lim@uncg.edu . Also,it would be great if you could be there by 4:45 to set up and find out what you will be doing. If any of you are willing/able to draw caricatures or quick portraits let Maria Lim know!

CERAMICS WORKSHOP!!!
Hi Everyone,
UNCG NAEA is hosting a free hands-on ceramics workshop with Po-Wen Liu. He has work on display at the Green Hill Gallery at the Cultural Arts Center and has his own professional studio: Natural Green Pottery Studio. Please check out his website at http://powenliu.blogspot.com/
The workshop will be held on Friday, March 19 at 4:30-6:30pm in the Studio Arts building ceramics room in the basement level. Po-Wen Liu will give clay demonstrations and you will get the chance to create your own piece. We will need to know how much clay to have prepared, so if you are interested in attending you must sign up by responding to this e-mail. Please respond by Wednesday, March 17, if you are planning to attend.
Also, we will have a follow up workshop on Friday, April 30. This will be the glaze workshop. It will be in the same location from 4:30-6:30pm. You must have attended the clay workshop to be able to attend the glaze workshop (but you are not required to attend both if you can only come to the first).

Our Mural at Reedy Fork Elementary was an amazing success! We worked hard brainstorming, painting, and perfecting our mural and the students and faculty were very impressed and appreciative! Thank you all for your help and support!

Falk- Visiting Artist Jon Rubin
Jon Rubin is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores the social dynamics of public places and the idiosyncrasies of individual and group behavior. His solo and collaborative projects include creating a game show for ideas, opening a fake store in an indoor shopping mall, starting a restaurant that secretly runs via take-out from its double across the street, broadcasting an office's telephone conversations through a talking piano, running a neighborhood truck that gives away free homemade goods and services, operating a radio station that only plays the sound of an extinct bird, developing a hypnotized human robot army, producing a cable access variety show at a senior center, and developing a free nomadic art school. He has exhibited video, drawings, installations and public projects internationally including at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico; The Rooseum, Sweden; Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Germany; Nemo Film Festival, Paris; as well as in backyards, living rooms, and street corners.

News From our amazing faculty advisor/art ed professor:Hi Student officers,
I am so happy to inform you that our proposal submitted to the NAEA National Convention, in Baltimore has been competitively accepted. Congratulation!!! We will go to National!!! As Pat expressed, this is the first time in our history of art department. :) Pat & I are talking about the way we(Four of you & I) can receive college funds from the Dean. I will update with you about this matter.
I would like to meet the group who signed for the mural project to brainstorm ideas for a design. Friday, Oct.16, 4 pm was our next chapter meeting date & time I guess (due to having fall break for the second Friday that we originally chose to meet monthly). We shall call a meeting for the same date as we did set and we also can discuss about the mural. I will bring some finger food for our social and hope to discuss about our picnic!! :)

de Kooning's "Woman" turns 60!
CELEBRATE HER BIRTHDAY AT THE NEXT WEATHERSPOON ART MUSEUM COMMUNITY DAY Saturday, October 17, 2009, Free
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to present the Fall Weatherspoon Community Day on Saturday, October 17, 2009, from 1-4 pm.
The focus of the day’s activities will be Willem de Kooning’s painting Woman, which turns 60 this year. A special community birthday cake will be cut and served at 2 pm.
Woman (1949) by Willem de Kooning is a pivotal work in the artist's career, as it anticipated the six famous "Woman" paintings he began in 1950. The purchase of the painting by the Weatherspoon in 1954 created something of an uproar in Greensboro: many people wondered why funds contributed in memory of former arts educator, Lena Kernodle McDuffie, would be spent on such a garish and aggressive image. Woman now holds rank as the jewel in the crown of the Museum's permanent collection.
Woman’s birthday party will include hands-on art activities for the young, and the young at heart, with special de Kooning-inspired collage/drawings, wacky photographic self-portraits, Modernist-inspired marker paintings, and a gallery scavenger hunt.
And, if you have not heard the Percussion Ensemble from The Winston-Salem Enrichment Center, this is your opportunity! They will be performing from 3-4 pm.
Director Aaron Bachelder (multi-instrumentalist and composer) formed the group in 1997 with interested students at the arts-based, not-for-profit program in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for adults with disabilities. The Percussion Ensemble recently released its third recording, Ten Songs, an eclectic mix of original music and unique interpretations of American standards, and it has performed at venues in New York and at the Museum of American Folk Art in Baltimore.
Players include: Valarie Williams- glockenspiel Andrew Shumaker- keyboards Jonathon Lindsay- piano Walker Lewis, Jr.- marimba, percussion Meredith Lamy- vibraphone Marcie Haley- drums Aaron Bachelder- guitar

In 1989, the museum moved into its present location in The Anne and Benjamin Cone Building designed by the architectural firm Mitchell Giurgula. The museum has six galleries and a sculpture courtyard with over 17,000 square feet of exhibition space. The American Association of Museums accredited the Weatherspoon in 1995 and renewed its accreditation in 2005.
Collections + Exhibitions The permanent collection of the Weatherspoon Art Museum is considered to be one of the foremost of its kind in the Southeast. It represents all major art movements from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Of the nearly 6,000 works in the collection are pieces by such prominent figures as Willem de Kooning, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Cindy Sherman, Al Held, Alex Katz, Henry Tanner, Louise Nevelson, Mark di Suvero, Deborah Butterfield, and Robert Rauschenberg. The museum regularly lends to major exhibitions nationally and internationally.
The Weatherspoon also is known for its adventurous and innovative exhibition program. All student organizations that would like to be affiliated during the Fall 2009 semester MUST re-affiliate each semester, regardless of whether your org. is currently affiliated this semest...er. Please plan to send one representative to one of the fall re-affiliation meetings:
Tues. 9/1 - 5 pm, Maple room, EUC
Wed. 9/2 - 2 pm, Maple room, EUC
Thurs. 9/3 - 10 am, Maple room, EUC
Please note that organizations that fail to attend one of these meetings will automatically lose affiliation for the Spring 2010 semester.
* Honor societies, graduate student organizations, and club sports are not required to attend these meetings to remain affiliated, but WILL be required to complete the online re-affiliation application in Fall 2009 in order to remain affiliated (details to come in early September about the application).
