Announcements:

1. Art Can Event- Our group participated on April 23, 2009. We won 2^nd place overall and altogether the event raised about 1,300 cans. Ashley Perry has kindly put information and a video about this event on our blog.
2. NCAEA ’09 Conference- Scheduled for October 22-25, 2009 in Winston-Salem. Maria has proposed two presentations for our officers to give at the conference. All members must join NCAEA and our chapter to participate.
3. NAEA ’09 Minneapolis- Maria kindly showed us a photo presentation of her trip to this Conference.

Student Chapter Business Agenda:

1. Fundraising Event Ideas: Many ideas were raised including making and having people pay to decorate coffee cups, face painting at Kid’s Fest and other similar venues, handmade T-shirts to sell, painting seeded pots, etc. We are planning to host fundraisers relatively every month.
2. General Meeting Dates: We plan to schedule meetings once a month with updates on our blog and emails regularly unless we need to meet more than this for events. We will decide on times and dates for next year at the beginning of the fall semester ’09.
3. Membership Fee: $5?

Additional Comments Raised:

• We need more advertising through email, flyers, and setting up tables in the EUC or atrium, etc.
• Jamie Cope suggested that we involve ourselves in some way with Greenhill, a downtown art building for children.
• In regards to the Tate Street Art Booth that we are planning to participate in, the suggestion to have people pay to paint a set amount of time on a large canvas. Then we would ask for their email address to send them a picture of the final project. More details to come.
• Maria is planning to have a separate orientation of for incoming freshman Art Education majors. She is working to require them to join our Student NAEA Chapter. The suggestion to get a booth at SOAR was raised.

EXHIBITION – EILEEN NEFF: BETWEEN US
May 24 – August 16, 2009

The Weatherspoon Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to present the exhibition Eileen Neff: Between Us, which opens to the public on Sunday, May 24, 2009.

Eileen Neff: Between Us presents a selection of the artist's work from the last decade. Trained as a painter, Neff initially used the camera to produce pictures that she incorporated into early photo-objects and installations. Since 2000, her use of digital technology has facilitated her cut-and-paste approach to combining images into seamless collages, in which her essential theme of the collapse between interior and exterior space becomes apparent.

Neff's subjects seem at once familiar and arresting, a result of her using camera and computer, natural images and those constructed within her studio. One of her pictorial devices is the mirror image. In Narcissus (2001), a strip of river edged by lush forest is mirrored vertically, doubling the work's disorienting effect. Similarly in The Field and the Plane (2007), Neff produces a deep landscape by placing one image of a field on top of itself to meet an empty strip of sky.

A quiet sense of humor pervades Eileen Neff's work, as seen in a series of photographs entitled after famous writers. Dickinson (2004) shows a framed photograph of a long horizontal landscape hanging on a paneled interior wall, while a drawn-back curtain reveals an enlarged vertical sliver of the same landscape. The work speaks to Dickinson's self-imposed confinement and her deep appreciation for nature. Also from 2004, Thoreau poses a large landscape photograph resting atop a table in an otherwise bare room. Here, culture props up nature, much as it did for Thoreau as author, activist, and naturalist. The spare rooms of both works suggest the transcendentalist leanings of the two authors.

Eileen Neff has been exhibiting her work in this country and abroad since 1982, extensively in the Philadelphia area where she has lived and worked for many years. Eileen Neff: Between Us was initially organized for the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia by Patrick T. Murphy, director of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and Ingrid Schaffner, senior curator at the ICA. It was shown at the ICA and the Royal Hibernian Academy before traveling to the Weatherspoon.

Henri Matisse Internship

Greensboro, NC - April 28, 2009 - Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center, offers a 4 week internship for undergraduate or graduate art students through its After School Arts program. Intern would be expected to research, develop and implement a project with students in grades K-5 about the life and work of Henri Matisse. Project timeline: March 29-April 30, 2010.

After School Arts After School Arts is a program of City Arts and the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. Its purpose is to provide quality after school care that includes homework assistance, one-on-one tutorials and activities that expose young people to the artistic traditions and culture of people throughout the world.

About Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center is an outreach arts facility affiliated with the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and City Arts. It provides a variety of opportunities for emerging artists to either develop or share their skills and knowledge with young people.

Business Agenda

• ArtCan! is next Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 2:30 outside of the Weatherspoon Art Museum! UNCG NAEA Student Chapter will be competing.
• We decided to meet in the Studio Building, room 225 at 1:00pm on Thursday, April 23 to make our own t-shirts to wear to the ArtCan! event. If you can't be there at 1:00, drop a shirt off to Maria Lim and we will make it for you and bring it to the event at 2:30.
• If possible, please meet us at the Studio Building room 225 office at 2:00pm on Thursday to carry the cans over to the event site.
• We need a club logo: if you have design ideas, please e-mail them to uncgnaea@gmail.com as a JPEG file by Monday morning (April 20) when we will send out all the designs by e-mail and vote on which one to use. The final design will be printed out and ironed on to our club t-shirts.
• We have a good number of cans (but still need more) and were able to come up with an idea for our sculpture. If you have cans please bring them with you on Thursday to the ArtCan! competition.

Our UNCG NAEA Student Chapter Constitution

Constitution

ARTICLE I: CLUB AND AFFILIATION

Section I The name of this organization shall be the UNCG Student Chapter of the National Art Education Association

Section 2 The organization is affiliated with the State and the National Art Education Association.

ARTICLE II: OBJECTIVE

The object of this organization shall be to promote learning in the visual art and art education.

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

Section 1 Membership in this organization is open to anyone interested in art education, particularly but not limited to Art Education students.

Section 2 The advisor and officers shall determine the dues needed for membership in accordance with any state and national dues along with any needed dues for club operations.

Section 3 Members majoring in Art Education shall register with the NAEA. All non-Art Education members shall pay club dues only.

ARTICLE IV: MEETINGS

Section 1 General meetings shall be held monthly.

Section 2 Special meetings may be called by the president.

Section 3 All decisions at meetings will be made by majority vote with two-thirds attendance.

Section 4 Notification of meetings will be announced at previous meetings, through email or other electronic communication, and by means of advertising and publicity.

ARTICLE V: OFFICERS

Section 1 The officers of this organization shall be a president, a vice president, two publicity agents, and a treasurer.

Section 2 The president shall call and run the meetings, and shall organize activities.

The vice president shall support and assist the president and keep minutes of the meetings.

The publicity agent shall be responsible for the promotion and advertising of meetings and events including recruitment of new members.

The treasurer shall be responsible for the management of the income and expenditure of club funds.

Section 3 The officers shall be elected by ballot at the end of the spring semester and shall continue in office for one year (fall and spring semesters).

Section 4 A majority of all votes shall be necessary to constitute an election.

Section 5 Any vacancies may be filled by special election.

Section 6 Officers may be removed from office by a majority vote of members.

ARTICLE VI: ELECTIONS

Section 1 Elections shall be held at the end of the spring semester.

Section 2 Nominations will be made: at the meeting prior to the election or to the current advisor or officers before the election meeting.

Section 3 Nominated candidates must have been a member for at least one semester, be in good academic standing, and be able to fulfill the nominated position for the full term.

Section 4 Good academic standing shall be considered holding a minimum of a 2.7 GPA and being a full time student. The nominated candidate must provide verification of good academic standing to the club advisor.

ARTICLE VII: THE CONSTITUTION

Section 1 The constitution shall be read at the fall semester of each year.

Section 2 Copies of the constitution shall be available to all interested members.

ARTICLE VIII: THE ADVISOR

Section 1 The advisor for this organization shall be the Coordinator of the Art Education program or another appropriate member of the faculty.

Section 2 The advisor’s duties are to provide support and information.

ARTICLE IX: AMENDMENTS

Section 1 This constitution may be amended at a regular meeting by a 2/3 vote of all members.

Section 2 Amendments to this constitution become effective upon approval of the organization, the Council on Student Welfare, and the Vice President for Student Services.

Business Agenda

• We had a great first meeting!
• There were seven students present along with one advisor.
• We discussed future fund-raising options as well as other club activities such as:
  Art Can!-Sculpture competition, Tate Street Festival, Bake Sales, etc.
• We voted and agreed on the Constitution of the UNCG Student Chapter of the NAEA after making one change:
  We added a section 3 to Article III (Membership)
  Section 3: Members majoring in Art Education shall register with the NAEA. All non-Art Education members shall pay club dues only.
• The constitution will be available on http://uncgarted.blogspot.com/
• We also voted on five Club Officers. Their running term is from now until spring 2010. The officers are as follows:

2:30 PM Art CAN!, Farmers' Market and Sustainability Film: "Wal-Town" -

Celebrate Earth Week at UNCG and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. For a full list of events and sustainability initiatives at UNCG, visit http://www.uncg.edu/rcy and http://sustain.uncg.edu.

2:30-4 pm: Art CAN! - UNCG departments and student organizations battle in the first-ever team sculpture building competition using only canned and boxed foods. Competition begins at 2:30 with judging at 3:15pm. All 'sculptures' will be donated to the Greensboro Food Bank following the event. Co-sponsored by the UNCG Division of Enrollment Services and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Rain or shine event.

4-6 pm: 2nd Annual Farmers' Market - Meet local farmers and organic growers from the Piedmont Triad area. Produce and other food items will be available for purchase. Sponsored by the UNCG Sustainability Committee.

6:30 pm: Sustainability Film: Wal-Town - Six student activists. Thirty-six Canadian towns. One giant corporation. A daunting experiment in activism. A group of six university students, calling themselves Wal-Town, take to the Canadian highway over two summers. Directed by Sergeo Kirby, 2006, 66 min.

In collaboration with the UNCG Sustainability Committee, the Weatherspoon Art Museum presents a second year-long film and discussion series on current issues affecting the environment. Films are free, seating is limited. For details on the films and ways UNCG is working to identify sustainable practices across the community, visit http://sustain.uncg.edu.

We need to meet before this to practice and begin collecting cans!!!! Let me know if you can!!

Hopefully we will be able to participate in the upcoming Weatherspoon Event Art Can! Maria Lim [our faculty advisor] has emailed to sign up but it's first-come first-serve.

Today was the first unofficial meeting for the UNCG chapter of the National Art Education Association. We have a lot to do before we re-affiliate, and we are excited to get started! Soon, I will have more updates and information to post, but for now we will just keep you up to date through email and facebook!
